I completed my final year at Columbia University’s School of Social Work where I participated in the intensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) training program and lab under the direction of André IvanoA, Ph.D., a colleague of Dr. Marsha Linehan, creator of DBT. I have practiced as an individual DBT therapist, a DBT skills group co-leader, and a member of a weekly DBT consultation team.
I was initially drawn to DBT because of its evidence-based treatment for people contending with substance use disorders, with whom I am skilled, and quickly understood that its comprehensive model achieves even more in terms of shaping individuals requiring intense emotion regulation. I have experience working with clients who battle suicidal behavior, self-harm, shame/guilt, interpersonal difficulties, Borderline Personality Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Autism, Bipolar Disorder, and ADHD. DBT can be helpful for people who have not found success with other treatments. It can also help people improve their ability to tolerate stress, respond to negative situations, and communicate with others.
Today, at 55 years old, my background in Spanish, French, and Italian, and working with the LGBTQ+ community, and various spiritual backgrounds, in NYC and Virginia, gives me a deep appreciation for the values of others while strengthening my own. Navigation and adaptability among cultures and identities is one of my strengths. I believe that what’s most important—in every organization, in every part of the globe—is treating every individual with empathy and respect.
