Artisan Counseling is dedicated to the craft of individual, couples and family counseling. In order to achieve this goal we are creating a blog that is designed to provide additional information and resources for clients, counselors and anyone a helping profession. The Artisan Blog may include information about books, articles and other helpful resources but honestly this is our first blog so we will see how it goes.

What Happens in Your First Counseling Session?

What Happens in Your First Counseling Session

Starting counseling is a big step. If you’ve been putting off making an appointment because you’re unsure what to expect, you’re not alone.

At Artisan Counseling, we make the first session straightforward. Here’s what actually happens.

What the First Session Is For

Your first session is an intake — a two-way introduction.

Your counselor will:

  • Learn who you are
  • Understand what brought you in
  • Begin identifying your goals

You don’t need to have everything figured out. That’s literally what counseling is for.

What You Might Be Asked

Common intake questions include:

  • What’s been on your mind lately?
  • Family background and living situation
  • Previous experience with counseling or mental health treatment
  • Physical health and sleep
  • Goals — even if they’re vague

It’s perfectly okay to say “I’m not sure” or “I haven’t really thought about that.”

Paperwork & Logistics

Before or during your first session, you’ll:

Confidentiality is protected by law, with limited exceptions your counselor will explain.

Existing clients can access forms through the Client Portal.

How Long Does It Last?

First sessions are typically 50–60 minutes. It usually goes faster than people expect.

What You Might Feel Afterward

Common reactions:

  • Relief that you finally started
  • Emotional fatigue from talking about personal topics
  • Feeling like you didn’t say what you wanted to say

All of these are normal. One session isn’t enough to judge the entire experience.

How to Know If the Counselor Is a Good Fit

After your first session, ask yourself:

  • Did I feel heard?
  • Was the counselor present and engaged?
  • Did they ask meaningful follow-up questions?
  • Did I feel safe, not judged?

If something felt off, give it another session or two. But it’s also okay to try a different counselor from our team.

Go In Without Pressure

You don’t need:

  • A breakdown
  • A revelation
  • A polished story

Showing up is the whole point. Counseling builds over time.

Preparing for Your First Appointment

Optional but helpful:

  • Jot down what’s been on your mind
  • List what you hope to get from counseling
  • Write down questions for your counselor

The most important thing is to come as you are. That’s enough.
