The cost of therapy matters. We want to make sure you have the information you need before your first appointment so there are no surprises. Below is a clear overview of the insurance plans we accept, self-pay options and steps you can take to verify your coverage. If you have questions about any of this, our office team is available to help.
Artisan Counseling is credentialed with most major insurance providers in Virginia. Below is a list of the plans we currently accept.
Coverage varies by plan. Not all plans within an insurance company carry the same benefits for outpatient mental health services. We recommend verifying your specific benefits with your insurance provider before your first appointment.
If you do not see your insurance listed, contact our office at 757.503.2819. We may still be able to assist you, or we can discuss other payment options.
If you do not have insurance or prefer not to use your plan, self-pay is available. Please contact our office for current session rates. Payment is due at the time of service.
We accept the following forms of payment:
If you would like to keep a card on file for recurring sessions, a credit card authorization form is available through our client portal.
Artisan Counseling offers sessions at a reduced rate with clinicians who are completing their supervised clinical hours toward full licensure.
This option may be a good fit if you are looking for affordable support and are open to working with a clinician in the early stage of their career. Supervised clinicians follow the same ethical standards, documentation requirements and treatment protocols as fully licensed counselors.
To ask about availability and rates for supervised sessions, contact our office directly.
Before scheduling your first session, it is helpful to confirm what your plan covers for outpatient mental health services. Here is how to do that:
Write down the reference number for the call and the name of the representative you spoke with. This can be helpful if there is a billing question later.
If you would rather have our team assist with verifying your benefits, let us know when you call to schedule.

If Artisan Counseling is not in-network with your plan, you may still be able to receive services and submit claims for out-of-network reimbursement. Contact your insurance provider to ask about your out-of-network benefits.
Yes. Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts can typically be used to pay for therapy sessions. Check with your account administrator to confirm eligibility.
Most insurance plans now include coverage for telehealth sessions, but this varies. Confirm with your provider that virtual mental health visits are included under your plan.
Let our office know as soon as possible. We will verify your new coverage and let you know if anything changes regarding your sessions or out-of-pocket costs.
This depends on your plan. If your plan includes a copay, coinsurance or an unmet deductible, you may owe a portion at the time of service. Our office can help you estimate your cost after verifying your benefits.
We offer reduced-rate sessions with supervised clinicians. For more information, see the section above on low-cost options.
