Below you will find information about the services, counselors and logistics specific to this location.
Suffolk covers more ground than most people realize. From the Harbour View corridor to the rural stretches near the North Carolina border, the city holds a wide range of communities, lifestyles and needs. That geographic spread also means that access to mental health services is uneven. A family living in northern Suffolk near Chesapeake has a different set of options than someone living 30 minutes south near the Gates County line.
Our office in the Harbour View area was placed intentionally to serve as many Southside residents as possible. It is positioned near the Route 58 corridor with access from both the Suffolk and Chesapeake sides of the city, and it serves as an alternative to practices concentrated in the Norfolk and Virginia Beach core.
The demand for therapy on the Southside has grown. More people are recognizing that the stress of caregiving, financial strain, relationship conflict, grief, trauma and the daily grind of holding everything together does not go away by ignoring it. But recognizing the need and acting on it are two different steps. For many people, the barrier is not willingness. It is access: finding a counselor with availability, who takes your insurance, whose schedule aligns with yours and who has experience with what you are dealing with.
That is the gap we are working to close. Our Suffolk office has a team of clinicians with varied specializations, evening and Saturday hours, Medicaid and commercial insurance acceptance and a commitment to keeping wait times manageable. We also offer telehealth for clients who cannot make the drive or who prefer to attend from home.
If you have been considering therapy but have not yet taken the step, we are here when you are ready.
Below is an overview of the counseling services offered at our Suffolk location. Each description includes a link to a full service page with more detail.
One-on-one therapy is the core of our clinical work. It gives you dedicated time with a licensed counselor to address what is weighing on you, identify the patterns that are keeping you stuck and build the skills and awareness to make changes that last.
Clients at our Suffolk office come in with concerns ranging from persistent anxiety and depression to unresolved grief, trauma from childhood or adulthood, difficulty managing anger, substance use, self-worth issues and the strain of major life changes. Some know exactly what they want to work on. Others just know that something is not right.
Both starting points are valid. Your counselor will help you define your goals and build a plan. Sessions run 50 to 60 minutes and are held weekly or biweekly based on what makes sense for your situation.

Two people can share a life and still feel completely disconnected from each other. Couples counseling creates a space where that distance can be examined honestly and where both partners can begin to rebuild how they communicate, resolve conflict and relate to each other.
At the Suffolk office, our counselors see couples dealing with recurring arguments, emotional withdrawal, broken trust, disagreements over parenting, changes in intimacy and the pressure of managing a household while trying to maintain a relationship. Your counselor facilitates the conversation and ensures that both voices are represented equally.
Both partners attend sessions together in most cases. Your counselor may recommend occasional individual check-ins to support the process.

A family is a system. When one part of that system is under strain, everyone feels it. Family counseling addresses the dynamics within the household rather than focusing on a single member.
Families at our Suffolk office seek therapy for reasons including tension between parents and adolescents, a child whose behavior has changed at home or school, adjustment after divorce or remarriage, grief that the family has not been able to process together, substance use affecting the household and communication breakdowns that have made daily life tense.
Your counselor will work with the family to set shared goals and will adjust the approach to account for the ages, developmental stages and needs of each member.

Our Suffolk clinicians are trained in a variety of evidence-informed approaches. The modality used in your treatment will depend on what you are working through and what your counselor recommends. Here is what is available at this location.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). A method that targets the thought patterns fueling your distress. CBT gives you tools to recognize distorted thinking, test assumptions and change behaviors that are maintaining the cycle. It is effective for anxiety, depression, chronic stress and sleep difficulties. [Learn more about CBT]
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). DBT equips you with skills to manage overwhelming emotions, tolerate difficult moments without acting impulsively, stay grounded through mindfulness and communicate your needs more effectively. [Learn more about DBT]
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR). A structured protocol for reprocessing memories that are stored with their original distress still intact. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain move those memories out of their activated state. [Learn more about EMDR]
Brainspotting. A body-oriented method that identifies specific eye positions connected to stored distress and allows the brain to process that material without requiring detailed verbal narration. [Learn more about Brainspotting]
Somatic Therapy. An approach centered on the physical body. Somatic methods help you become aware of how your nervous system is holding stress and support the release of activation that talk-based therapy may not fully address. [Learn more about Somatic Therapy]
Art Therapy. Clinical use of creative materials to process emotions and experiences that may not have words. No artistic background is needed. Board-certified art counselors are part of the Suffolk team. [Learn more about Art Therapy]
Narrative Therapy. A conversation-based approach that explores the stories you carry about yourself and helps you evaluate which of those stories are accurate, which are incomplete and which are ready to be rewritten. [Learn more about Narrative Therapy]
