If you’ve been referred to EMDR or are curious about it, understanding the process can reduce anxiety about getting started.
At Artisan Counseling, our trained EMDR counselors walk you through every phase at a pace that feels safe.
How EMDR Differs from Talk Therapy
Most counseling relies primarily on conversation. EMDR adds bilateral stimulation — alternating left-right activation through eye movements, tapping, or sounds.
This is believed to support the brain’s natural memory processing system.
EMDR is recognized by:
- World Health Organization
- American Psychiatric Association
- Department of Veterans Affairs
The Eight Phases of EMDR — What Each Looks Like
Phase 1 — History & Treatment Planning
Your counselor learns your background and identifies target memories.
Phase 2 — Preparation
You learn grounding and coping skills before any processing begins. Some clients spend several sessions here.
Phase 3 — Assessment
You identify:
- The most disturbing image from the memory
- The negative belief attached to it
- Physical sensations in your body
- A preferred positive belief
Phase 4 — Desensitization
You hold the memory in mind while following bilateral stimulation. Your counselor checks in between sets.
Phase 5 — Installation
Strengthening the positive belief alongside the processed memory.
Phase 6 — Body Scan
Checking for residual physical tension.
Phase 7 — Closure
Every session ends with grounding to ensure you leave feeling stable.
Phase 8 — Reevaluation
Next session begins by reviewing what shifted since the last appointment.
What You Might Feel During & After
During processing:
- Strong emotions
- Physical sensations
- Old memories surfacing
After sessions:
- Tiredness
- Vivid dreams
- Continued insights between appointments
All of this is normal and part of the healing process.
How Many Sessions Does EMDR Take?
- Single-incident trauma: as few as 6–12 sessions
- Complex trauma: longer-term treatment
Sessions run 60–90 minutes and are typically scheduled weekly.
Questions to Ask Before Starting
- Is your counselor fully trained in EMDR (not just introduced to it)?
- How do they handle pacing?
- Will you spend adequate time in the preparation phase?
