Who We Are

About Artisan Counseling

Artisan Counseling is a group practice in Hampton Roads, Virginia, dedicated to the craft of individual, couples, family and group therapy.

Who We Are

Artisan Counseling is a group counseling practice serving Hampton Roads and communities across Virginia. Our tagline says it simply: we are "Dedicated to the Craft of Individual, Couples, Family and Group Therapy." Whether you are working through anxiety, grief, trauma, a relationship that feels stuck, or a family going through change, our team is here to help you find a path forward at a pace that feels right for you.

We see clients in person at our offices in Newport News and Suffolk, and through secure telehealth for clients located anywhere in Virginia.

The Craft of Counseling

We chose the name Artisan because we believe good therapy is a craft. An artisan pays close attention to the material in front of them, uses proven tools with skill, and shapes each piece with care. Counseling works the same way. No two people, couples or families are alike, so we do not offer one-size-fits-all treatment.

Our counselors draw on a wide range of evidence-based and experiential approaches, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • EMDR, brainspotting, somatic and trauma-informed care
  • Art therapy and narrative therapy
  • Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) and compassion-focused therapy
  • Motivational interviewing, solution-focused and strength-based work
  • Sex therapy and perinatal counseling
  • Person-centered, integrative and positive psychology approaches

Your counselor will work with you to understand your goals and choose the tools that fit your needs.

Our Team

Artisan Counseling is led by its owners and partners, Michele Haynam, LPC, NCC, CSAC, CSOTP, and Dr. Ben Newman, PhD, LPC, CSAC. Together they have built a team of 21 counselors with a broad mix of training and experience.

Our team includes Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), residents in counseling, and a supervisee in social work. We also have board-certified art therapists (ATR-BC) and Certified Substance Abuse Counselors (CSAC). This range of backgrounds means we can often match you with a counselor whose experience and style fit what you are looking for.

You can learn more about each counselor, and filter by office location, on our Counselors page.
