Getting Started

New Client Information

Starting counseling is a big step. Here is what to expect as you begin with Artisan Counseling, from your first call to your first session and beyond.

Welcome

Reaching out for support takes courage. We want the process of getting started to feel clear and manageable, so here is an overview of the steps most new clients can expect.

Step 1: Reach Out

Call us at 757.503.2819 or send a message through our contact page. Let us know a little about what brings you to counseling, whether you are interested in individual, couples, family or group counseling, and whether you prefer in-person sessions in Newport News or Suffolk or telehealth.

Step 2: Match With a Counselor

Our team includes LPCs, an LCSW, residents in counseling, art therapists and substance abuse counselors, with a wide range of approaches. Based on your needs, schedule and preferences, we will help match you with a counselor who is a good fit. You are also welcome to browse our Counselors page and ask for someone specific.

Step 3: Complete Intake Paperwork

Before your first session, you may be asked to complete intake forms through our secure Client Portal. These forms help your counselor understand your background and goals. You will also receive information about our privacy practices and policies. Completing paperwork ahead of time lets you spend more of your first session talking with your counselor.

Step 4: Verify Insurance and Payment

If you plan to use insurance, have your insurance card ready when you contact us. We recommend reviewing our Insurance & Payment Information page and checking with your insurance plan about your mental health benefits. Our office can answer questions about payment before your first appointment.

Step 5: Your First Session

Your first session is a chance for you and your counselor to get to know each other. Your counselor will likely ask about what brings you in, your history and what you hope to change. They will also review confidentiality and its limits with you. It is normal to feel nervous, and you can share at your own pace. You are also welcome to ask questions about your counselor's approach.

Telehealth Setup Tips

  • Find a private, quiet space where you can speak freely.
  • Use a reliable internet connection and a device with a working camera and microphone.
  • Test your device a few minutes before your session.
  • Make sure you are physically located in Virginia during your session.
  • Keep a phone nearby in case you need to reconnect.

What to Bring and How to Prepare

  • Your insurance card and a photo ID, if requested
  • A list of any current medications
  • Contact information for other providers you would like us to coordinate with, if any
  • A few notes about your goals, questions or concerns

If you are coming to an office, please plan to arrive a few minutes early. Our offices are at 11713 Jefferson Ave., Suite 200, Newport News, VA 23606 and 1020 Bon Secours Drive, Suite 210, Suffolk, VA 23435.

After Your First Session

You and your counselor will talk about next steps, including how often to meet and which approaches may help. Counseling is a collaborative process, and your plan can change as you grow. You can use the Client Portal for forms and communication, and contact our office with any scheduling questions.
