Why Peninsula Couples Start Counseling

Every couple has its own reasons. Couples in the Newport News area often reach out when they are:

  • Arguing more often, or having the same argument again and again
  • Working through infidelity, dishonesty or a loss of trust
  • Managing a deployment, a homecoming or a PCS move
  • Balancing long or rotating shifts, including work at the Shipyard
  • Adjusting to a new baby, a blended family or children leaving home
  • Feeling more like roommates than partners
  • Deciding whether to stay together and wanting support to make that decision

You do not have to wait for a crisis. Many couples start counseling simply because they want to communicate better.

Couples Counseling at Our Newport News Office

Your first sessions. In the first one to three sessions, your counselor meets with both of you and may schedule a short individual session with each partner. This helps your counselor understand the history of the relationship and what each of you hopes will change.

Regular sessions. Sessions usually last 50 to 60 minutes. Most couples meet weekly or every other week.

In person or online. You can meet at the Newport News office, by telehealth, or a mix of both. Telehealth can help when work schedules make it hard to arrive together, as long as you are both in Virginia at the time of the session.

Evening and Saturday times. The office is open until 9:00 pm Monday through Thursday and from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday. Evening times are limited, so tell us your preferred time when you request an appointment.

Approaches Our Counselors Use

Your counselor will choose an approach based on what the two of you bring to therapy. Methods used in couples work at Artisan Counseling include:

Gottman Method. Practical tools for managing conflict, rebuilding friendship and creating shared meaning.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Helps partners understand the emotional needs underneath recurring conflict.

EMDR after betrayal. Abby Brundage, LCSW, CCTP offers EMDR at our Newport News office. When an affair or another betrayal feels traumatic, EMDR may be used alongside couples work to help a partner process what happened. Learn more about EMDR therapy and infidelity and affair recovery counseling.

Communication skills. Structured practice in listening, validating and asking for what you need.
