Couples and marriage counseling at our Suffolk office is a place for both partners to slow down, be heard and work out what is getting in the way. The office is in the Harbour View area near the Route 58 corridor, so it is within easy reach from Chesapeake, Portsmouth and northern Suffolk, and it offers a Southside option outside the Norfolk and Virginia Beach core.

Your counselor guides the conversation and makes sure both voices carry equal weight. Together you look at the patterns that keep repeating and practice new ways of handling conflict, closeness and everyday decisions. Sessions are available in person in Suffolk or by secure telehealth anywhere in Virginia.

What Brings Southside Couples to Counseling

Couples at our Suffolk office often come in because of:

  • Recurring arguments that never seem to get resolved
  • One partner pulling away emotionally
  • Broken trust after an affair or other betrayal
  • Disagreements about parenting or household roles
  • Changes in intimacy
  • Financial strain or caregiving responsibilities that leave little time for each other
  • Questions about whether to stay together

Some couples come in during a crisis. Others simply want to reconnect before small problems grow. Both are good reasons to start.

How Couples Counseling Works in Suffolk

Getting started. Early sessions focus on understanding your relationship history and what each of you wants to change. Most of the work happens with both partners together, and your counselor may suggest an occasional individual check-in.

Session length. Sessions run 50 to 60 minutes and are usually held weekly or every other week.

Evenings and Saturdays. Evening sessions are available Monday through Thursday, and Saturday sessions are offered on a limited basis. Both tend to fill up ahead of time, so it helps to request those times early.

Telehealth. Video sessions are a practical option if you live far from the office, have young children at home or have unpredictable work schedules. Both partners need to be in Virginia at the time of the session.

Gottman Method. Research-based tools for handling conflict and strengthening friendship and trust.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Focuses on the emotional needs and attachment patterns underneath repeated arguments.

EMDR after betrayal. EMDR is available at our Suffolk office. When an affair or another betrayal feels traumatic, it may be used alongside couples work to help a partner process what happened. Learn more about EMDR therapy and infidelity and affair recovery counseling.

Communication practice. Structured exercises for listening, validating and stating needs clearly.
